UW-Madison Students to Celebrate Campus Craft Brewery at the Memorial Union
Monday, April 27, 2015

The highly anticipated launch of the first beer from Campus Craft Brewery, a unique student-led initiative with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will take place on Friday, May 1st from 3-5pm at the Memorial Union Terrace. After a semester of hard work, experimentation, and perseverance, Inaugural Red will celebrate the unparalleled collaboration between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Wisconsin Brewing Company.

Campus Craft Brewery was founded this spring by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Food Science in collaboration with Wisconsin Brewing Company. Through a cutting-edge new course offered by the Fermented Foods and Beverages Program in CALS, students had the unparalleled opportunity to enhance classroom and laboratory study with hands-on experience in a commercial-scale brewery. "Students get a chance to, one, go through fermentation but also see what it's like to take a product from idea to market which is not a simple task." Hans Zoerb, Lecturer in Food Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, described the rare opportunity his students had.

In March, the Babcock Hall pilot brewery hosted six student teams who competed for their beer to be chosen as the winning Red Lager recipe by industry experts including WBC’s own brewmaster Kirby Nelson and UW-Madison faculty. The winning team was selected to brew their recipe at Wisconsin Brewing Company where students participated in brewing to full commercial scale.
"I'm confident that the product is going to be really good and that's going to reflect on our program," said Jim Steele, Professor of Food Science and Fermented Foods and Beverages Program Lead.

Meet students from differing majors who have come together as Campus Craft Brewery at the Inaugural Red launch celebration on May 1st at the Memorial Union Terrace. From 3-5pm learn all about this one-of-a-kind educational experience while celebrating innovation, togetherness, and all that is Wisconsin.

"I don’t think its actually quite hit me yet that my beer is going to be at the Union and throughout Wisconsin; I think it's a little surreal for all of us," Andrew Lefeber, CALS student and Winning Recipe Team Member.
